You'll never know until you try.  Keep creating, writing and never stop dreaming!
"There's one thing your writing must have to be any good at all. It must have you. Your soul, your self, your heart, your guts, your voice -- you must be on that page. In the end, you can't make the magic happen for your reader. You can only allow the miracle of 'being one with' to take place. So dare to be yourself. Dare to reveal yourself. Be honest, be open, be true...If you are, everything else will fall into place."  --- Elizabeth Ayres

Signings, Art and Sales Laura Ling + Lisa Ling, SALE, and Buff Monster

Signings, Art and Sales Laura Ling + Lisa Ling, SALE, and Buff Monster: "Signings, Art and Sales Laura Ling + Lisa Ling, SALE, and Buff Monster

Yesterday we released a lot of information of events happening in LA. Laura Ling and Lisa Ling signing. I think it might be their only one, and the book is a good read. It's in a way, an adventure, true crime, political, and at the same time, family. Laura will also be in GR66. Don't miss this signing in LA on the 17th. 5-7pm. But almost a week from now is the SALE! Sat and Sun. Take 20% off, NOT ART and have fun checking out the latest toys, t shirts, comics and more. Then at the same time, it's BUFF Monster's custom painted show. Imagine, 50 or so artists contributing their custom take on Buff Monsters figure. They really look amazing. So that's actually a lot of info for just LA and these are all pretty strong events. If these don't bring you out, then I'm stumped.

Norman Schureman Memorial Scholarship Announced

Norman Schureman Memorial Scholarship Announced

Following the tragic death of Art Center alumnus and faculty member Norm Schureman, the College has established theNorman Schureman Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship will be available to incomingProduct Design students.
“Norm inspired hundreds of students—not only those that he taught, but those considering whether or not they even had the gumption to apply to Art Center,” President Lorne Buchman said. “One of the ways the College can be true to his memory is to make sure young creatives have access to pursue a first-rate design education.”
Schureman graduated from Art Center in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Product Design. He began teaching at the College in 1992.
“Norm loved being a teacher and truly believed an Art Center education was something special,” Schureman’s widow, Fati, said. “Our family is humbled that the College has come together to honor Norm with a scholarship in his name.”
Schureman’s father Bob is an Art Center faculty member. “Art Center has been such a big part of my life, and the life of my son,” he said. “I’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of support the Art Center community has given our family.”
Individuals interested in making donations to the Scholarship can donate online or contact Senior Development Officer Palencia Turner at 626.396.2366.
Karen Hofmann, Chair of Product Design at Art Center College of Design, said, “Norm was a friend and mentor and a source of inspiration both inside and outside of the classroom. He made students feel that they could change the world and this scholarship is a way to ensure his legacy continues.”
In addition to the Norman Schureman Memorial Scholarship, the family will open a trust fund for Schureman’s two young sons. For questions about contributing to the trust, contact Director of Public Relations and Communications Jered Gold at 626.396.2251 .

Norman Schureman
It is with deep sadness and grief that I write to inform you of the passing of our dear friend and colleague Norman Schureman.  A tragic accident took his life this past weekend, and we join his family and friends in mourning the loss of this celebrated and adored member of our community.
Norman was a beloved instructor, colleague, mentor and friend of hundreds of Art Center students, faculty, staff and alumni.  Norm’s relationship with Art Center began almost 40 years ago when his father, Bob Schureman, taught classes in the ID department and Norm would tag along as a young curious creative.  Years later, Norm launched his official design career after graduating from Art Center in Industrial Design.  He returned to the College to teach at Art Center Europe and then Pasadena.  Both Norm and Bob have inspired hundreds of design students over the years.
For over 20 years,  Norm devoted himself tirelessly to the College, instilling in his students a passion for design, a love for drawing and an eye for excellence. In his Viscom and Dynamic Sketching classes, as well as his Product Design classes, Norm brought criticality tempered with humor to his students and their work. Each term would generate new and constantly innovative ideas, images and prototypes. A place in the student gallery was always reserved for the great projects from Norm’s classes.
Our hearts go out to Norm’s entire family.  At the appropriate time we will discuss with them the option of a memorial service on campus to celebrate Norm’s life and his extraordinary contributions to Art Center.  We will keep you posted on time and date.  We will also offer grief counseling to those in need through Human Resources and the Center for Student Experience.  Details will follow on Monday.
We join as a community in grieving this painful and devastating loss.

Black Asians in Giant Robot magazine

Black Asians in Giant Robot magazine

An article on the indigenous blacks of Southeast Asia, aka the Negritos, has been published in the current issue of Giant Robot magazine (Issue 64).

Giant Robot is a bi-monthly magazine whose primary focus is Asian and Asian-American pop culture. Articles in GR also regularly cover a broad range of subjects, including explorations of Asia's varied cultures and peoples.

In the current issue of Giant Robot, Paco Taylor (editor of Kung Fu Grip! zine), offers a thoughtful introduction to Asia's oldest, but most little known peoples: the black Asians of Southern Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and the Andaman Islands.

According to the writer, "This piece was inspired by my father, who spent time in Southeast Asia as a young Marine. The subject is one that's close to my heart and it is an honor to have the chance to cover it in the pages of Giant Robot. I hope that readers will give this issue [of GR] a glance."

Giant Robot, a 15-year old publication, is carried by the nation's largest book sellers, including Borders and Barnes & Noble. It is also on the racks of newsstands and comic book shops across the country. Look for your copy of Giant Robot (GR64) today!

How To: Write like an Architect!

How To: Write like an Architect!: "

Typography can be a lot of fun if you really get in to it. Sometimes it can take a lot of time though if you’re creating it with a lot of detail and thought behind it. Usually these types of typography is the most appreciated by designers and viewers of any design blog. It is important to understand that typography is a way to generate text using stylized concepts that brings thoughts to patterns and shapes that truly make you think of the written words in a different way.

There are a million ways to stylize your text into typography and using simple fonts is one way. However it may come across lame and ordinary if you’re just creating it by buying or downloading a font. It will be way more appreciated and eye catching if you really get into the spirit and create a font from scratch and truly spend time organizing it from the bottom up.

I found a really interesting tutorial on YouTube that I’d like to share with you all. It’s about stylizing a font like an architect would do it. It teaches you how to organize and draw, by hand, a truly good looking font in just a matter of seconds. If you have some skills and just 10 minutes this will truly change the way your designs or presentations look. Be patient and draw the lines correctly. The end result will even impress your closest friends.
