Write a poem, thirty lines or fewer on any subject, style, or form, typed or neatly hand printed, single or double line spacing.

And/or

Write a short story, five pages maximum length, on any subject or theme, creative writing fiction or non-fiction (including essay compositions, diary, journal entries and screenwriting). Also, must be typed or neatly hand printed using single or double line spacing.

Multiplepoetry and short story entries are accepted.

The Story

"The Music Never Stopped," based on the case study "The Last Hippie" by Dr. Oliver Sacks, M.D. ("Awakenings"), chronicles the journey of a father and son adjusting to cerebral trauma and a lifetime of missed opportunities. Through the music that embodied the generation gap of the 1960s, the film weaves the heartwarming progress of Henry and Gabriel's relationship.

In 1967, after his father Henry Sawyer (J.K. Simmons) forbids him to see a Grateful Dead concert, prodigal son Gabriel Sawyer (Lou Taylor Pucci) runs away from home. Nearly twenty years later, Henry, a straight-laced engineer and lover of big band music, is shocked to learn that his estranged son requires major surgery to remove a previously neglected brain tumor.

After the operation, the extent of Gabriel's condition is made clear: the tumor damaged the part of his brain that facilitates the creation of new memories. For Gabriel, past, present, and future become indistinguishable, and he lives fixed in the era of Vietnam, acid trips, and psychedelic music. Determined not to let their son slip away from them again, Henry and wife Helen (Cara Seymour) vow to connect with Gabriel, who is barely able to communicate effectively. Unhappy with Gabriel's lack of progress, Henry does his own research on brain injuries, which leads him to Dr. Dianne Daly (Julia Ormond). She is a music therapist who has used her methods to make significant progress with victims of brain tumors.

As Diane works with Gabriel, she realizes that he is most responsive to the music of the Rock and Roll era - The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and particularly the Grateful Dead. Even though he is unaware that the era of his music has long passed, the effect is remarkable, and he begins to be able to have conversations and express himself. Although Henry loathes rock and roll, he is determined to forge new memories and salvage his relationship with his son. While his own health fails, Henry begins his own pilgrimage through the bands of the sixties. WHO: SXSW is turning 25 years old, and charter sponsor BMI wants to help celebrate. The performing right organization is giving songwriters the chance to win a trip to the annual SXSW Music Conference, March 16-20, in Austin, Texas.

WHAT: BMI songwriters are invited to upload photos of their inspiration or themselves while writing or performing a song for a chance to win a trip to the 2011 SXSW Music Conference and Festival, including a three-night hotel stay in downtown Austin and two roundtrip airline tickets to Austin, TX.

When: The contest is open through February 22, 2011.

Do not put statements in the negative form.
And don't start sentences with a conjunction.
If you reread your work, you will find on rereading that a
Never use a long word when a diminutive one will do.
Unqualified superlatives are the worst of all.
De-accession euphemisms.
If any word is improper at the end of a sentence, a linking verb is.
Avoid trendy locutions that sound flaky.
Last, but not least, avoid cliches like the plague.

Yesterday we released a lot of information of events happening in LA. Laura Ling and Lisa Ling signing. I think it might be their only one, and the book is a good read. It's in a way, an adventure, true crime, political, and at the same time, family. Laura will also be in GR66. Don't miss this signing in LA on the 17th. 5-7pm. But almost a week from now is the SALE! Sat and Sun. Take 20% off, NOT ART and have fun checking out the latest toys, t shirts, comics and more. Then at the same time, it's BUFF Monster's custom painted show. Imagine, 50 or so artists contributing their custom take on Buff Monsters figure. They really look amazing. So that's actually a lot of info for just LA and these are all pretty strong events. If these don't bring you out, then I'm stumped.

Scripts are due for the next session of the Hollywood Outreach Program

Our submissions and coverages are getting better and better. We have many more scripts moving to the Second Round and becoming Winners. That means, more scripts are being read by our Friends of the Network. Please go to the HOP webpage for submission guidelines. Please read the guidelines carefully.
